It is hard to define yoga because there are many variations and types that focus on different aspects of an intellect. Each person enters with a slightly different intention than the rest. However, on the most basic level, yoga is the union between your mind, body, and spirit. It is a practice that allows you to be have more self-awareness and become centered and at ease with situations in your life. Yoga will connect and ground yourself in MANY aspects in your life.

For me, I LOVE yoga. I try to go to a yoga class every week for multiple reasons…

  1. It is time specifically devoted to yourself and allowing you to leave behind your other commitments during that time.
  2. It is an AMAZING stress reliever. A yoga class is one of the easiest ways that I can calm my mind.
  3. It does wonders for my hips. I am not a flexible person and running makes my hips tight. Incorporating yoga into my life has alleviated the tightness in my hips from running IMMENSELY.
  4. As I said before, each person enters with a slightly different intention, allowing the class to be accommodating to everyone’s level. It does not matter if you have never taken a class, recovering from an injury, or have done yoga for years. EACH AND EVERY PERSON WILL BENEFIT.
  5. If your mind is constantly racing and you work yourself up by the littlest things… yoga is for you. Not only is it a stress reliever for me, it truly calms my mind and allows me to set my intentions for the next week.
  6. IT IS THE EPIDOME OF ‘LISTEN TO YOUR BODY.’ What works for you may not work for others. There are TONS of variation for each pose, again allowing every yoga level to do the same class.

Honestly, I think I could list about 100 more reasons why everyone should incorporate yoga into their life. BUT, I do know that yoga classes are EXPENSIVE. As a college student, the struggle is very real to have enough money to live and have a social life, let alone pay for expensive yoga classes.

To me, yoga classes ARE WORTH THE MONEY. It is an investment in the wellbeing of myself. It is something that I find rewarding both intellectually and physically. HOWEVER, as I do love to take yoga classes at a studio, there are other options to incorporate the practice in your life for FREE.

YouTube has a TON of yoga options that you can do at home. Likewise, there are varying durations for the videos, making it easier to incorporate into your life. If you are someone that gets distracted by others in the same room, this may be more beneficial to you than a studio. Yoga is meant to allow you to focus on YOURSELF and nothing else.

My FAVORITE yoga YouTube channel is “Yoga With Adriene.” She is SO knowledgeable and has a ton of videos to try. You will never run out of content to watch. I highly recommend checking out her channel and giving it a try!

Yoga has benefitted my life in MORE ways that I could’ve imagined. Believe in yourself and do not doubt the process and you will benefit from it as well. However, the moment you become frustrated, you lose everything you could’ve gained from that class. There have been times where I am not focused mentally and I just go through the motions of class. I leave frustrated because I am not in peace and at ease mentally.

If I could give anyone advice in helping their mental health, it would be to incorporate yoga into their life.
